Notice:
As of 4:45 p.m. EDT on 7/16/2026 this site has restored production and delivery
of GOES-East imagery from the GOES-19 ABI. We are still awaiting
restoration of GLM and SUVI data, and will update this banner
when more information is available. Please direct any questions to
[email protected].
WFO views that are customarily sourced from GOES-East (GOES-19) will be
sourced from GOES-West (GOES-18) for the duration of the GOES-19 outage.
Locations in the easternmost portion of the U.S. may appear skewed or distorted.
This is an unavoidable consequence of using GOES-West datadata. Please direct any
questions to [email protected].
While GOES animation code will not run on older Internet Explorer browsers,
they work in the newest versions of Microsoft Edge. If you are using
Internet Explorer, please try a different browser: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or
MS Edge are all supported.

GLM Extent Density of Lightning is the number of lightning flashes that occur within a grid cell over a given period of time. FED was the first GLM product routinely available to weather service forecasters. The FED product is the best single metric to convey both the quantity and extent of lightning activity. It is useful for both storm trending applications and to depict geographic coverage.
In this visualization, GLM is superimposed on a GeoColor background image.
